Science
Science helps children to make sense of the world around them, develop curiosity and ask questions about how things work. At Arlecdon Primary School, we provide exciting, practical learning opportunities that encourage children to explore, investigate and think critically. We make full use of our rich outdoor environment, enabling pupils to learn first-hand about plants, animals, habitats, seasonal changes and sustainability while developing a secure understanding of scientific concepts and processes.
Intent
At Arlecdon Primary School, we aim to inspire curiosity and develop a lifelong love of science. Through the study of biology, chemistry and physics, pupils build knowledge, ask questions, investigate the world around them and develop an understanding of how science impacts everyday life and the future. Learning is carefully sequenced so that knowledge and skills build progressively from EYFS to Year 6.
Implementation
Science is taught through engaging, knowledge-rich units that develop both scientific understanding and enquiry skills. Pupils learn through practical investigations, observations, discussion and exploration of the natural world, including regular use of our outdoor learning environment. Key concepts are revisited throughout the curriculum, enabling children to make connections, deepen their understanding and retain knowledge over time. Opportunities for sustainability education and links to STEM careers further enrich learning.
Impact
Pupils leave Arlecdon as enthusiastic young scientists who can think critically, work scientifically and confidently explain their understanding using appropriate vocabulary. They develop a strong understanding of the world around them, the importance of healthy lifestyles and their role in caring for the environment, preparing them well for secondary education and future life.
