Art and Design
Intent
Our Art and Design curriculum aims to inspire creativity, curiosity and self-expression while developing children’s knowledge, skills and appreciation of art, craft and design. From the Early Years through to Year 6, pupils explore a wide range of artists, cultures and creative techniques, building confidence in drawing, painting, sculpture, printing, textiles, digital media and design. We want every child to develop their creativity, imagination and ability to communicate ideas through art.
Implementation
In EYFS, children begin their artistic journey through exploration, play and hands-on experiences. They are encouraged to experiment with colour, texture, pattern and different materials as part of their expressive arts development. Across Key Stages 1 and 2, learning is carefully sequenced to build knowledge and skills progressively. Pupils study significant artists and designers, develop technical skills, evaluate their work and create original pieces using a variety of media. Opportunities for discussion, reflection and creativity are woven throughout the curriculum to ensure all children can succeed and enjoy art.
Impact
Children leave our school with the confidence to express themselves creatively and an appreciation of art’s role in the wider world. They develop a secure understanding of artistic techniques, can discuss artists and their influences, and demonstrate resilience, independence and pride in their work. From EYFS onwards, pupils build artistic skills, creativity and cultural awareness, enabling them to become confident, reflective and enthusiastic young artists.
